West coast tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh studied and performed with Lennie Tristano and worked extensively with Lee Konitz. His smooth tone and long phrases are distinctly different from the blues influenced hard bop saxophonists of the era. Marsh leads a quartet on two tracks, but the rest of the record features a stripped down trio format of Paul Chambers (bs) and Paul Motion (dr). One of those tracks, Yardbird Suite, is included below.
This is the original stereo pressing on Atlantic and was released in 1958. It’s an excellent sounding session, engineered by the great Tom Dowd.
