I saw this in a record shop and picked it up based on the players, label, and era–turned out to be a good move. I like soul-jazz anyway, but this record is really happening, particularly Idris Muhammad (dr) and Leon Spencer Jr. (org)–they’re the cats and it’s great to hear them in prime form. I’m not huge fan of the “electric” sax sound, but it strangely fits in the context.
Funk. This is the real stuff. The drumming on the intro alone is worth buying the record. Insane.
This is the original pressing on Prestige with the purple trident label, and the back cover is stamped “preview copy”. It was released in 1971 and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder.
