Sonny Clark Trio — Roach/Clark/Duvivier

This excellent trio date was recorded in March 1960 for the Time label, and was Sonny Clark’s only session as a leader that wasn’t recorded for Blue Note.  This is a stereo second pressing in excellent condition.  Though the music is the same on both versions, the first pressing had a different cover and was titled the “Sonny Clark Trio”. This version, released two years later, has it’s own unique cover art and bills Clark with the other members of the trio, Max Roach (dr) and George Duvivier (bs).

This is a new record for me, I’ve listened to it several times and (not surprisingly) have really enjoyed it.  It carves out it’s own niche next to the other piano trio music I’ve been listening to lately, groups led by Bobby Timmons and Bill Evans.

  1. Nice sounding records these Time pressings, always worth looking out for.

Yeah, I like them—of course I want his Blue Note LP’s, but that’s not likely to happen!

a brilliant pianist together with # 1 drummer.
during his life Sonny didn’t achieve fame and money, being discovered in late 70’s-80’s.
his production is wide enough, no cheap.
among post-bop pianists he deserves a high place: I’m sorry not having followed him before.

I read that he became more popular long after his death, particularly in Japan. I have a few recordings that include him and I really enjoy them. I have a CD called “Standards” that’s quite good, on top of being a very nice sounding CD
