Serge Chaloff — Blue Serge

What a great record!  This March 1956 session pairs the excellent baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff, just over a year before his untimely death from spinal paralysis, with some of my favorite sidemen–Sonny Clark (p), Leroy Vinnegar (bs), and Philly Joe Jones (dr).

This has the turquoise label, which I believe is a first pressing.  It shows wear and has some light marks, but sounds great for the most part with only very light background noise.  Yet another example of the quality of these old pressings.

this is an original first pressing, pairing with Boston blow up!, all Serge recorded for Capitol.
two great records for my most liked bari player in modern jazz.
no wide success, no piano less quartet, but the most stimulating baritone.

Great–have a copy of Boston Blow Up too! Another great player that’s new to me. I do like that other “piano-less quartet bari player” too though….
