Jimmy Smith — Root Down

This live Jimmy Smith classic from 1972 is best known for it’s title track, which was sampled by the Beastie Boys.  Wilton Felder (bs) and Paul Humphrey (dr) are killing throughout this LP and are the backbone of the BB “Root Down” hit.  Jimmy is really sharp on this session and sounds great in the r&b/funk setting.  Arthur Adams (gt) and Buck Clark (perc) round out the group.

I recently found this well-loved copy for low dollars at a local record shop.  This record was absolutely on my “short list”, so I’m glad to have it until a cleaner copy shows up.
