Score! I was fortunate to find a good deal on this 1964 Grant Green date at a local record shop. Green is joined by Larry Young and Elvin Jones for an interesting session that stretches well beyond the standard blues, standards, and soul-jazz often found in the organ trio setting. I’m a huge fan of that stuff, but it’s refreshing to hear this new take on that instrumentation. It’s really engaging to hear Larry Young forging new ground on the Hammond organ with the explosive Elvin Jones in the drum chair.
This is a first pressing in mono with the New York USA label and no deepgroove on both sides. It isn’t the best sounding Blue Note session to my ears, it does beat out the stereo copy from the excellent Music Matters 45rpm reissue series that I picked up last winter.
