This is a classy, soulful record by the great tenor player Gene Ammons. It’s a relaxed set that has a nice mix of blues and ballads. As you’d expect, the band is fantastic–Tommy Flanagan (p), Doug Watkins (b), Arthur Taylor (dr), with Ray Barretto (conga), which is a nice addition that sets it apart from similar small groups.
This is a clean stereo first pressing, which I haven’t seen much of, mono must have been much more common. Sounds quite good, although it does have bit of that hard-panned/”hole in the middle” thing. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder.
