Bobby Womack is such an underrated singer. If you haven’t checked him out, his 1972 album Understanding is a great place to dig in. The whole record is excellent with great playing throughout–more than half it was recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound and the remaining tracks were done at American Sound in Memphis. “Woman’s Gotta Have It”, his first Number One R&B hit, was recorded at the latter. Bobby Wood (p), Bobby Emmons (org), and Reggie Young (g) are impeccable as always, but Mike Leech (bs) and Hayward Bishop (dr) are the MVP’s. Although it’s dressed up with strings, this is deep funk.
